Изображения наград России[edit]
Добрый день!
Я нарисовал изображения наград России, но их удалили, почему? 194.143.151.129 13:17, 8 July 2023 (UTC)
- (via Google Translated) Since you don't indicate under what account you uploaded them, there is probably no way for anyone to determine what images you are talking about. (Поскольку вы не указываете, под какой учетной записью вы их загрузили, вероятно, никто не сможет определить, о каких изображениях вы говорите.) - Jmabel ! talk 19:48, 8 July 2023 (UTC)

Wrongly used images online[edit]
Hello! When someone uses my images from Wikimedia Commons, licensed CC-BY-SA 4.0, but fails to credit my name or link to / write the license, can I send them an invoice for it or raise other legal actions? What does Commons do to reduce wrong use of images? If I don't even get credited as the photographer, and people use the photos just like they've taken them, it really reduces my motivation to keep on contributing. Regards, Vasmar1 | Marius Vassnes (talk) 17:44, 8 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Vasmar1: Yes, that is absolutely a copyright violation. If they used them online, you should probably first just ask that they fix it. If they used it in print, it's too late to fix it, and you have every right to sue. Similarly if they used it online and refuse to fix it. - Jmabel ! talk 19:50, 8 July 2023 (UTC)
- See also Commons:Enforcing license terms. All the best with this. FotoFree (talk) 20:49, 8 July 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Vasmar1. Commons can't really give you any legal advice other than what's written in COM:ENFORCE. Similarly, Commons can suggest that the reusers of Commons content follow COM:REUSE, but it can't force them to do so. One thing you might try is a en:DMCA takedown notice, but you might want to ask a lawyer who deals with intellectual property rights for more details about that. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:06, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
I want to upload an image from the publication of a niche political party[edit]
It was a letter sent to the UN in 1973 during the occupation of Wounded Knee. Would usage of the symbols and maps in said letter be allowed under fair use? Genabab (talk) 10:08, 9 July 2023 (UTC)

- @Genabab: Commons doesn't accept fair use content of any type per COM:FAIR; so, you wouldn't be allowed to be uploaded such content here. Some local Wikipedia's, however, do allow fair use content to be uploaded and used, but usually it's subject to quite a lot of restrictions, which are even more restrictive in many cases than fair use. You can find out more about English Wikipedia policy regarding such content at en:Wikipedia:Non-free content and en:Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria. -- Marchjuly (talk) 10:56, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
- Looks like it might be {{PD-US-no notice}}, although some of the images within it may have been copyright violations by the document itself. - Jmabel ! talk 16:36, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
Suggestion[edit]
It would be helpful if there is a button with each image that can filter out images that require attribution. I reuse images in videos, and so there is no easy way to give credit. If when I put in a search term, I can filter out everything except those things that say "attribution not required," it would make content creation faster and easier. Then I would be sure that the images that came up in the search are free to use in a video or in a venue where it is difficult or or "clunky-looking" to give a credit link. As it is, I have to go through the images image-by-image and check the credit requirement. I don't know the technology involved in doing that, but if it is possible, it would make searching a whole lot easier. Thank you. 75.111.219.108 14:53, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
- You are a bit of an edge case in looking only for images that do not require credits. And, also: this is at least partly about you staying technically legal while ignoring all courtesy requests for credit by institutional providers of PD images (e.g. museums, archives, etc.). I personally can't see us going out of our way to help someone do that. - Jmabel ! talk 16:40, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
- It is just as easy giving credits on a video as it is giving credit other places you would use the image. Regards Vasmar1 | Marius Vassnes (talk) 19:24, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Vasmar1: no, it is actually harder in a video. Adding titles is a pain in the butt. But it's really not our (Commons') job to solve a problem like that. People have all sorts of special-case criteria on what licenses (or even which PD justifications) work well for them and what don't, and solving this for them is not a role we've taken on, any more than walking them through trademark issues. - Jmabel ! talk 00:51, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: I disagree. I have been doing video-editing for some years too, and it's not really "a pain in the butt". Do it one time and use that as a template for the rest of the video. Some editing programs also have already made templates, ie. for giving photo-credit. I agree with the part that it's not something Commons is supposed to help with either way, and IMO a photo should always be credited. Regards Vasmar1 | Marius Vassnes (talk) 05:51, 10 July 2023 (UTC)

Request for template[edit]
Hello! Can somebody make a template like {{Depicted website}}

(for freely-licensed webpages, obviously.)
I believe {{Label}}
and "Depicted X" templates can and should be used instead of language-specific descriptions. --QuickQuokka [talk • contribs] 20:23, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
- Just to clarify, this is for screenshorts for websites QuickQuokka [talk • contribs] 20:27, 9 July 2023 (UTC)

Sub-categories[edit]
In uploading an image, how do I add a sub-category to the list of categories? Bmzuckerman (talk) 21:09, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Bmzuckerman: From the list of your contributions, I guess you have been trying to create a new category, named "Hamilton Web Company" or "Hamilton web company". If so, 1) go to one place where you wrote that red category link, for example your list of contributions, or add that red category link again to one of your files, 2) click on that red link, 3) in the edit box, insert the links to the parent categories of which your new category should be a member, for example Category:Textile mills in Rhode Island, 4) preview, 5) publish, 6) add the new category to the relevant files. You can see the page Commons:Categories for details. If that's no what your question was about, then please specify with an example. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:56, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks, Asclepias, for your prompt assistance. While following your tips, I succeeded in creating a new category for "Hamilton Web Company." However that did not show up where I really want it -- as a sub-category listing at the top of an existing category, such as "Textile Mills in Rhode Island." Further advice? Bmzuckerman (talk) 22:35, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
- Edit the page of the new "Category:Hamilton Web Company" and format the links to the parent categories in double brackets, for example: [[Category:Textile mills in Rhode Island]]. Use the exact name, for example note the lowercase in the word "mills" in that category. Also, please revert your edit [1] to "Category:Textile mills in Rhode Island". It's the other way around. -- Asclepias (talk) 23:18, 9 July 2023 (UTC)

List of governors of Portuguese India in Portuguese - unable to load picture[edit]
I am trying to prepare a talk based on this list which, in the Portuguese but not the English version, includes portraits of the majority of the governors. My starting point was Lopo Vaz de Sampaio (Sampaio) (listed as 6th governor in English version and 8th version in Portuguese version). In this list there is no picture of him. There are pictures of him in Wikipedia articles on him (different pictures in English and Portuguese versions) but not in the listing where there is a message saying file under preparation. I have tried to upload a picture of him from Wikipedia Commons but get a message saying I am not authorised. What can I do? Milbern (talk) 00:53, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Milbern: I assume this is about pt:Lista de governadores da Índia Portuguesa. And are we talking about File:Lopo Vaz de Sampaio (Archaeological Survey of India, Goa).png or some other photo? Milbern, when you ask a question like this you have a lot better chance to get help if you link the things you are talking about. - Jmabel ! talk 01:07, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you so much. I appreciate being able to refer people to the Wikipedia list and the person with whom I started my talk being in there as opposed to them being the only one missing in the first twenty.
- I would still like to know how to do things like this myself. Is there a simple guide somewhere?
- And thanks again. Milbern (talk) 15:13, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
- I see what happened. In pt:Lista de governadores da Índia Portuguesa you said you want File:Lopo_Vaz_de_Sampaio.jpg, but there is no such file! You have to use the name of a file that actually exists. - Jmabel ! talk 01:15, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for the quick response. Sorry. I don't have a clue what I'm doing and I've never tried this before. The list in Portuguese contains portraits of many of the governors. Where there should be a portrait of him there is a box that contains File:Lopo_Vaz_de_Sampaio.jpg. I only clicked on it in the list. I'm not trying to upload a file by that name. I'm just clicking on what is there. If it is not something that exists, why is it there at all? The file that I want to upload is his official 16th Century portrait which appears on his Portuguese Wikipedia page as File:Lopo Vaz de Sampaio (Archaeological Survey of India, Goa).png. as you correctly identified. I thought I had clicked on it and got a message saying that I'm not authorised. I'm probably too stupid to do it correctly. I'm certainly missing some bit of information that will enable me to do it. Milbern (talk) 01:49, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Milbern: The link to File:Lopo_Vaz_de_Sampaio.jpg is likely a remnant since the file used to exist, but was deleted two years ago. MKFI (talk) 08:06, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
- OK. Thank you for that information. It does not help me at all. I don't know what I am doing wrong. If the file was deleted two years ago, surely the link should not be visible (then I would not be treated as somebody who is doing something wrong if I click on it). Could somebody who has authority now remove it please?
- If I click on the link to the Wikipedia profile in the box next to that it brings up the article with the picture which should be in the box which is what I wanted to load so that the column with illustrations is more complete (and more particularly shows the portrait of the person I want to speak about). Could somebody please tell me how do I get that picture of Lopo Vaz de Sampaio into the box which has the dead link and should have the picture? Thank you. Milbern (talk) 08:24, 10 July 2023 (UTC)

Update Findus logo[edit]
Hi, I need to update the logo on the Findus page, since the one present is an old one and the company wants to update it. I have the logo the company gave me, how can I update it? Utente 1089 (talk) 15:51, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Utente 1089: I'm assuming by "the Findus page" you mean en:Findus.
- If the new logo is below the threshold of originality you can upload it to Commons using {{Textlogo}} and {{Trademarked}} in lieu of a license template. If it's above the threshold, then the only way Commons can accept it is if the company will grant a free license (which most companies will not); see COM:L if you want to know more about that, and COM:VRT for how they could provide the license to Commons. In any case, please use a different filename from the current logo, which we would want to keep for historical reasons.
- Failing either of those, you could upload the logo (again, under a new filename) directly to the English-language Wikipedia on a fair-use basis (we don't allow this on Commons). See en:File:Starbucks Corporation Logo 2011.svg for a good example of how this is done.
- In any case, once you've done that, edit en:Findus to use the new logo.
- Also: please see en:WP:COI. It sounds like you are editing the English-language Wikipedia (en-wiki) on a topic where you have an undisclosed connection to the subject of the article. You need to declare that connection, or en-wiki will probably block your account. - Jmabel ! talk 18:05, 10 July 2023 (UTC)

Handling duplicate files post cropping[edit]
I cropped an image that I imported from youtube (under the share license) but decided to upload the cropped image as a new separate file (as I thought I needed to keep the source file for verification purposes). Now I have two files, instead of one embedded inside the other.
Should I propose the original file for deletion (and what kind of deletion), OR can they be merged? The file in question is "File:Ueli Steck Les Drus "North Couloir Direct" (VI, Al 6+, M8) 1.png" (original), and "File:Ueli Steck Les Drus "North Couloir Direct" (VI, Al 6+, M8) 1 (cropped).png" (cropped). thanks. - Convenience links: File:Ueli Steck Les Drus "North Couloir Direct" (VI, Al 6+, M8) 1.png, File:Ueli Steck Les Drus "North Couloir Direct" (VI, Al 6+, M8) 1 (cropped).png - Jmabel ! talk 21:14, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
- I personally wouldn't bother doing anything: just use the version you want; the other is harmless. But if you like, you can download the full-res image from File:Ueli Steck Les Drus "North Couloir Direct" (VI, Al 6+, M8) 1 (cropped).png, then upload it as a new version of File:Ueli Steck Les Drus "North Couloir Direct" (VI, Al 6+, M8) 1.png, then nominate File:Ueli Steck Les Drus "North Couloir Direct" (VI, Al 6+, M8) 1 (cropped).png for deletion. - Jmabel ! talk 21:18, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
- In this particular case, the uncropped image does not seem useful. You could nominate it for deletion. Or you could leave it. It's not really important. There is no general rule. In other types of situations, it may be different. In some cases, it can be useful to have both images as separate files. In some other cases, it may be useful to upload the original and then overwrite it with the modified version. It depends on the specifics of each situation. I don't think there's any interest to take the time of an admin to merge those two files. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:28, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
- The one useful thing about the uncropped version is that the time thing at the bottom serves as documentation for where in the video the still was pulled from. - Jmabel ! talk 23:02, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
- Okay, I will leave both versions in place which seems like the consensus advice. Thanks for all your help on this. Aszx5000 (talk) 11:24, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Aszx5000: If you want to group both versions in the same file, you can still do it with the method mentioned above by Jmabel, overwriting the original version with the cropped version and nominating the other cropped file for deletion. There is one day left for a request for speedy deletion with G7. After that, it can be an ordinary deletion request. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:33, 11 July 2023 (UTC)

Can someone please fix this template?[edit]
Hi, I was replying to a comment on one of my nominations for Quality Image, and somehow managed to break the nomination template. I am not quite sure how to rectify it, as I'm new to templates on wikis. If someone could fix it for me, I'd really appreciate it. The nomination is the first one under July 5. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Quality_images_candidates/candidate_list#July_5,_2023 Mayfair Rose (talk) 00:24, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Mayfair Rose: When something like this happens, the best thing to do tends to be to retrace your steps and look for the edit that introduced the error. Most like you accidentally edited the template's syntax and that's causing it to not work as intended. Either you added something that's not needed and the template doesn't know what to do with it, or you removed something that is needed and the template can't find it. If you unable to find the problematic edit, you can revert all of the ones you made back to the last stable version, and try and make the same edit again. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:55, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for your help. I reverted my edits and will try to figure out how to insert my comment so it doesn't break the template. Mayfair Rose (talk) 01:44, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
copyvio[edit]
why is this a copyvio [2] and [3]??--Ozzie10aaaa (talk) 11:58, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
- If the images are indeed in PD, there needs to be a correct license tag used. {{CC0}} is only used for images the copyright owner releases to PD. For works that were produced as an official duty of a government employee, PD is automatically assumed, unless stated otherwise or originating from a country that copyrights government works, for which a different license tag is used. Somebody stated that the image source claims copyright and doesn't allow reusing the photo freely, in your talk page, which you swiftly reverted, but kind of forgot that the history is publicly visible. Polda18 D C 12:26, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Ozzie10aaaa: It's not a copyvio, but it's not offered under a CC0 declaration, so it cannot be tagged with a CC0 template. There may be a PD template somewhere for PD CDC journals like this, but I didn't find one with a quick search. There's a CDC template for works of US employees and a template for images from the CDC image library, but they don't do for this. If there is no specific template, you can always use the general template PD-because, and quote in the parameter the PD statement of the journal: "All materials published in Emerging Infectious Diseases, including text, figures, tables, and photographs, are in the public domain and can be reprinted or used without permission with proper citation.[4]". And you can request a license review. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:07, 11 July 2023 (UTC)

- You do not upload files at Wikipedia. You upload at commons.wikimedia (this site). Which foto do you want to update? It may be a case to upload a new revision, but it is more likely a new foto with a different name. Once it is uploaded (and description and copyright are ok) you can replace it in the article in Wikipedia. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 19:52, 11 July 2023 (UTC)

- It is only necessary for non-free images. But in this case: If the existing image is non-free and at en.wp it does not make sense to add another non-free image. And a free-license image belongs to commons. (Bassically also en.wp should not use non-free images. Either don't use the image at all or make an external link to the image) C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 10:57, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
- @C.Suthorn: you write, "Bassically [sic] also en.wp should not use non-free images." Meaning this is your personal belief? Fine, then, but not really useful information for a new user on a help desk. Or meaning that you believe this is en-wp policy? en-wp is quite clear on when non-free images are and are not permitted, and their rule is certainly not an absolute ban. (Just to be clear to the original poster: my remarks here are strictly about uploading directly to en-wp. Do NOT upload non-free images on Commons.) - Jmabel ! talk 13:50, 12 July 2023 (UTC)

Google SOE[edit]
Is there some kind of systemic blockage between a Google search and WikiMedia Commons? I ask because I'm disappointed that the two sets of photos that I recently uploaded to our category of "Textile mills in Rhode Island" do not appear in a Google search for the identical category. In fact, of the hundreds of images that appear when you search Google for "Textile mills in Rhode Island," only three of them (all of the Slater Mill Historic Site) come from WikiMedia Commons -- that is, only three of the 155 images in this WikiMedia category show up in a Google search. Any tips on how to get Google to pay attention to images uploaded to WikiMedia Commons? Bmzuckerman (talk) 20:01, 11 July 2023 (UTC)

Can you rotate an image?[edit]
My experience, so far, is that to get a vertical image uploaded in its entirety, it must be uploaded sideways. Once it's uploaded, can the image be rotated to an upright position? Bmzuckerman (talk) 22:15, 12 July 2023 (UTC)

Can I remove the warning tag?[edit]
This and some other files I recently uploaded have a CC Public Domain Mark 1.0 tag on the files. I had put the PDM tag in the wrong location and later moved it to the license section. Can I now remove the license warning tag? See here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:НАТО_Самит_2023,_Вилнус_-_Литванија_(11-12.07.2023)_-_53038365976.jpg Thanks, -- Ooligan (talk) 07:18, 13 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Ooligan: You can remove the orange warning tag, although that will not validate that file. You attributed it to the wrong entity. Given that this flickr account is not the original source nor the owner of the copyright, it cannot mark the photo as public domain, unless the owner of the copyright, which is NATO (see exif), has released it in the public domain. Evidence of it must be provided. You should look if you can find the original source and check the copyright status. If it is not free, it must be deleted. If it is free, it would still be better to delete this file and upload the photo from the original source of the owner of the copyright. Uploading from a secondary source complicates the verification of the status. -- Asclepias (talk) 11:52, 13 July 2023 (UTC)
- For information, the photos on the nato website are not free [5] and the photos on the nato flickr account are non-commercial [6]. With a quick look, I didn't find this photo in those places but, for consistency with their copyright policy, it should probably be assumed that this photo is not free, unless evidence is found that nato officially released it as free. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:40, 13 July 2023 (UTC)

- @Zoe Bach: For articles, you have to see the relevant Wikipedia project. Here is Wikimedia Commons, and we are only concerned with multimedia content. Yann (talk) 10:02, 13 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Zoe Bach: I've marked your article on en-wiki as a draft, which also provides you a button to click when you are ready to submit it for review. Can I extract the image from archive.org? The work is open to public access and has not been borrowed. Adilalishah (talk) 10:19, 13 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Adilalishah: It would help if you can give the URL. "open to public access" doesn't mean anything, as most of the Internet is "open to public access". Not all content of Internet Archive is really free. You need to check who is the author, and what is the date of publication. Yann (talk) 10:22, 13 July 2023 (UTC)

Z.B. - What image and what page are you talking about? We don't have a magic crystal ball, you know? Polda18 D C 06:28, 14 July 2023 (UTC)
- @PupAngel: I see you successfully uploaded File:Judges Badges from 2014 Oregon Puppy Contest..jpg. Are you saying that some other photo would not upload? If so, I'm guessing you were trying a cross-wiki upload, which has a lot of filters. See if you can upload it with Commons:UploadWizard.
- Also, when you say "made by Pounder": if someone other than you made the badges, then they hold the copyright on the badges, and your photo is a derivative work. The badge-designer will need to go through the process described at COM:VRT.
- Also -- and I hate to have so many caveats -- have you read, and are you complying with en:WP:COI? I'd hate to see you blocked on the English-language Wikipedia for going against their rules. - Jmabel ! talk 15:26, 14 July 2023 (UTC)

Commons and wiki-data item issue[edit]
Please help me fix this issue here Category:Kriti Sanon regarding the wiki-data item. It says there is some issue regarding the linking of the wiki-data item and I tried linking it again but its the same. 456legend (talk) 10:39, 14 July 2023 (UTC)
- It might be because the relevant Wikidata item is already linked to the relevant gallery page here on Commons. You'd need to create a new item or find another item that is created for the category. Looking at the main WD item, it does have a Commons category linked, but I don't think it works that way. I placed the WD infobox on the gallery page, I believe that was the intended use of the infobox. Category page is literally just for categorizing other categories, pages, and files. Gallery page (main namespace) are reserved for basic info and manual listing of files for the topic the gallery page covers. Polda18 D C 11:18, 14 July 2023 (UTC)
- @456legend and Polda18: I've stitched it together for you. It's a little tricky when there is a gallery page: you need to create a distinct Wikidata item for the category, then link them with category's main topic (P301) and topic's main category (P910). - Jmabel ! talk 17:04, 14 July 2023 (UTC)

How to move my post from the common page to the Wiki Loves Heritage competition page?[edit]
Hi, I have uploaded my photos in the wrong page - how can I move them to the Competition page instead? When I try to upload into the competition page, I had an error message saying that it was a duplicate image, eventhough I had tried changing the name of the new file. Please help. Thanks. NyonyaLee888 (talk) 11:49, 14 July 2023 (UTC)
- @NyonyaLee888: Hi, You only need to modify the description pages of your files, to add one or more templates and categories that relate specifically to the particular competition and country. You can look at photos uploaded by other users for the same competition and copy the relevant templates and categories. You can also request help on the talk page of the competition. Your question above is not telling what country, does not link to a specific competition page and your files don't include categories, so there are no obvious clues for us. After searching for some time, I guess you may refer to Commons:Wiki Loves Living Heritage in Singapore. If so, the talk page is Commons talk:Wiki Loves Living Heritage in Singapore. If you need more help, please be more specific. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:15, 14 July 2023 (UTC)

Some else's old photos (2)[edit]
I have an old photo of Trev Thoms circa 1972, when he was in a band in Switzerland called Mannheim. I don't have the negatives as someone else took the photo and sent it to me on a postcard. It's not the greatest of pics as Trev was feeling sick at the time. I also have another photo circa 1975 - 6, which Trev took himself featuring P Reeves and A Wyden as well. It is a good quality photo. As Trev is dead I can't get his permission, but I am sure he would approve. Can I upload either of these photos? Lance de Boile (talk) 17:32, 14 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Lance de Boile: I'm afraid "I'm sure he would approve" is a long way from "the copyright-holder has offered a license compliant with COM:L." Football Kit Creation[edit]
How do I create football kits? Is there a template I can use or must I create a page? How is it done? Soccerking.greg127 (talk) 20:12, 14 July 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Soccerking.greg127: welcome to Commons and sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I haven't produced a kit myself, but this is probably how I would go about it. There are various templates at Category:Football kit templates. Specifically, by going through the sub-categories, to Category:SVG association football kit templates. This is because SVG is recommended for diagrams such as these. SVG graphics can be edited with a free software application called Inkscape - see Help:Inkscape. Inkscape can look complicated but it is fairly straightforward to pick up - there are tutorials on the previous link. If you use a particular template to base your design on as a derivative work remember to give appropriate credit as/if required. Lastly, further help on this may be possible from Commons:Graphics village pump. Hope this gets you started. All the best. - FotoFree (talk) 08:50, 16 July 2023 (UTC)

Problems to iframe embed with Wikimedia Commons videos[edit]

- You cannot embed pages (including file description pages) from wikipedia in an iframe. Probably there is no exception for video pages with emnbedded video player. You can hotlink to the video file from you iframe, or you could call your own videoplayer within the iframe and add a hotlink to the video file as a parameter for the video file. you can use the video player from wikimedia, it is FOSS, so you are allowed to use it at your website. Deletion requests unattended for two months[edit]
Three deletion requests for voice files uploaded by me have been left unattended for almost two months.
- Commons:Deletion requests/File:Opening Statement of Sen. Dan Inouye on the 1st Day of the Iran-Contra Hearings.ogg
- Commons:Deletion requests/File:Opening Statement of Rep. Lee Hamilton on the 1st Day of the Iran-Contra Hearings.ogg
- Commons:Deletion requests/File:Opening Statement of Sen. Warren Rudman on the 1st Day of the Iran-Contra Hearings.ogg
I'm unsure if this is because I made errors in complying with the standard deletion request, but whatever the case, I hope for assistance here if this is the right place to ask. These files are from C-SPAN website, where coverage of floor activity of the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate is in the public domain (thus available for Commons), but coverage of hearings is not. This is why I asked for deletion of these files in relation to copyright.
However, these hearings on the Iran-Contra affair were filmed in 1987, which may qualify them for the Template:PD-US-1978-89 (I don't see any registers for these on the U.S. Copyright Office website) - but I can't be sure until the deletion requests receive outside input. Since I can't remove the requests without them being closed, another reason to ask for help here. Many thanks. SuperWIKI (talk) 07:40, 16 July 2023 (UTC)
- Hi SuperWIKI. Since there tends to be many more deletion requests than there are Commons administrators working to close them, it often can take quite a bit of time for a request to be formally closed. You can ask for an administrator to take a look at these by posting a message at COM:AN, but sometimes you just have to wait. Since you basically nominated your own uploads for deletion, and you're the only person who's commented in the DRs so far, an administrator might consider the deletion non-contentious and do so asap. -- Marchjuly (talk) 10:50, 16 July 2023 (UTC)

I upload my own work. There is no copyright. It belongs to me[edit]
I got an email from you stating that there is a copyright violation. It is only my work. I want to dispute
MY work people CABIN25 (talk) 15:17, 16 July 2023 (UTC)
- @CABIN25: as far as I can tell, the only upload of yours that has been deleted is File:Skyshare Pictures.jpg. If you designed this logo, please write to the Volunteer Response Team (as described at COM:VRT) and they can arrange to undelete. I assume you can understand why we can't presume the owner of an arbitrary account is telling the truth when they say a logo is their own work. - Jmabel ! talk 18:00, 16 July 2023 (UTC)
How to get copyrighted images removed[edit]
Hello, there are three images by the photographer Sam Tata on Wikimedia Commons that are under copyright and should be removed. Two are of the guitarist Michael Laucke and one is called Rooftop Watchers (which I uploaded when I had less understanding of copyright. At the time I thought Canadian photographs before 1949 were allowed). The photographer Sam Tata died in 2005 and his estate retains copyright until the year 2075. Can these images please be removed? Curiocurio (talk) 15:47, 16 July 2023 (UTC)
- For reference, File:Rooftop Watchers Sino-Japanese War 1937 Shanghai.jpg is the Rooftop Watchers one. The Michael Laucke ones are File:Michael Laucke - Wigmore Hall London England - Sam Tata Photo.jpg, File:Michael Laucke ~ Photo By Renowned Photographer Sam Tata.jpg, and File:Michael Laucke ~ In His Studio In Montreal, Photo By Sam Tata.jpg Abzeronow (talk) 16:03, 16 July 2023 (UTC)
- EDIT: For what its worth, Alamy says the Shanghai photograph is public domain. https://www.alamy.com/stock-image-rooftop-watchers-sino-japanese-war-1937-shanghai-166283969.html?irclickid=VZMUVSW75xyNWl5V3Sz9P1sNUkFzMrXRRyFsyw0&utm_source=77643&utm_campaign=Shop%20Royalty%20Free%20at%20Alamy&utm_medium=impact&irgwc=1 If the Shanghai photograph is a Canadian photograph, it would be public domain. If it was first published in a different country, then it may be still in copyright. Abzeronow (talk) 16:15, 16 July 2023 (UTC)
- Hello, All non-Crown photos taken before 1949, from anywhere in the world, are in the public domain in Canada. Many non-Crown Canadian photos taken before 1946 are actually ok for Commons, as they are also in the public domain in the United States, provided that they were first published in Canada early enough and without the notices and renewals required by U.S. copyright. They may be under copyright in the United Sates if one of those conditions is not met. So, it depends on each case. Photos taken by Tata as an employee of the NFB and published before 1973 are probably in the public domain in Canada as expired Crown copyright (example), but maybe not in the U.S. because of the URAA, although they might be accepted on Commons depending on who you ask. Tata immigrated to Canada in 1956, so his earlier works were probably first published in another country. The Rooftop Watchers 1937 photo, as a photo taken before 1949, is in the public domain in Canada, but for Commons it is probably not a Canadian photo and the Comons tag PD-Canada would not apply to it, unless there is evidence that it was first published in Canada. Three of the photos of Laucke taken by Tata, linked above, look like they were taken and published circa 1980. Another photo of Laucke, File:Guitarist Michael Laucke 2011.jpg, attributed to Tata by Laucke on flickr, was published in 2001 [7] [8]. They were used for promotion and likely commissioned, by Laucke or by someone else. Laucke's statement, when he dedicated the photos to the public domain, is that the copyright on those photos was owned by himself. Which, if the photos were commissioned by him, was probably true when the photos were taken and published, because at that time section 13 paragraph 2 of the Canadian Copyright Act [9] attributed by default the copyright ownwership to the person who commissioned the photos, not to the photographer, unless the parties specified otherwise in a contract. An amendment to the Copyright Act in 2012 abrogated that paragraph, but that amendment was not retroactive on that point (section 60 in the transitional provisions [10]). Assuming that Laucke commissioned the photos and owned the copyright, which is what he stated, his dedication of those photos to the public domain is valid. The OTRS (VRT) ticket 2015100510004243 confirmed Laucke's identity. You can nominate files for deletion if you want, but please be specific about the reason applicable to a file if you nominate it. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:22, 16 July 2023 (UTC)

Videos from Flickr[edit]
I'm interested in uploading the videos of the latest volcanic eruptions from this flickr user - https://flickr.com/photos/jsjgeology/albums/72177720309703132
However, the uploading does not work as it appears to accept only images and not videos. I'm sure I have uploaded videos from Flickr before and it worked. Has something change? Is it possible to do it, or is the video format not acceptable/usable here? Or is that something that needed by done by someone else? Hzh (talk) 14:22, 17 July 2023 (UTC)
- HzH: this page tells you about unploading Flickr videos to the commons. Ww2censor (talk) 17:24, 17 July 2023 (UTC)

how do I add photos to page[edit]
how do I add photos to a page? 2603:6010:E400:AC04:BD7F:2DF:FA66:C7E1 18:32, 17 July 2023 (UTC)
- Assuming that you mean adding a photo that is already on Wikimedia Commons to a Wikipedia article, see en:Help:Pictures. - Jmabel ! talk 18:52, 17 July 2023 (UTC)
Replacing a sub-optimal file[edit]
In seeking to replace a sub-optimal file, I clicked on "upload a new version of this file." However, it is not intuitively obvious to me what to do on the page that that brings up. Can someone give me specific directions? Bmzuckerman (talk) 21:24, 17 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Bmzuckerman: it's relatively unlikely that "upload a new version of this file" is what you want to do, anyway: see COM:OVERWRITE for why, but the short version is that unless you were the original uploader of that file, it is only for uncontroversial technical improvements.
- I'm guessing from what you write (you aren't giving a lot of detail, you don't even say what file this is about) you have a new photo you think is better than another for some Wikipedia article. Just upload it like any other new photo; then (assuming it is pretty uncontroversially better) edit the article to use your photo instead.
- If I've misunderstood what you are actually asking, please feel free to leave a more detailed question. - Jmabel ! talk 22:18, 17 July 2023 (UTC)
- To be more specific, I’ve been on a learning curve in uploading my architectural photos. I’ve learned to create better images than some of the ones I’ve already uploaded. After uploading the better images, I’d like to delete the “sub-optimal“ ones. Hence my question. 2601:8A:4100:ECC0:5077:5610:B1DA:1590 02:16, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
- If it is literally better post-processing on the same photo, which you took, then it's OK to overwrite. (I did that just yesterday myself with File:Georgetown PowerPlant Museum - hopper room - 2023-07-15 -03.jpg.) And if it's less than seven days old and isn't in use, you can get it deleted by putting {{SD|G7}} on the file page. But if it's a different photo: you already granted an irrevocable license when you uploaded, and the seven-day grace period has gone by, so you can't unilaterally take it down. You can nominate it for deletion (just like anyone else can), but usually that won't be granted. We tend to want to keep most photos, especially because we don't know what third parties may have used them (including making a deep link into our site).
- By the way: I presume that latest remark was by User:Bmzuckerman. You probably should log in when you post here. Otherwise, among other things, you are announcing your IP address to the world. - Jmabel ! talk 02:24, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for the go-ahead to replace some of my recently uploaded photos with better post-processing versions. But back to my original question, I’d appreciate some specific directions on how to “overwrite” (i.e., delete) the sub-optimal versions.
- Thanks, also, for the tip on logging in. Bmzuckerman (talk) 02:40, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Bmzuckerman: You click "upload a new version of this file". That should bring up a page rather like Special:Upload but specific to this file name as a target. You use the "Browse" button to select the updated file from your disk. Then you briefly describe the file changes (e.g. "color levels adjusted", "contrast increased", "slight rotate & crop; more saturated", or "perspective corrected"), and click "Upload". - Jmabel ! talk 04:41, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
