Summary[edit]
DescriptionDriverless vehicle - Coming soon to a street near you?.jpg |
English: What does the car of the future look like? In the case of an autonomous vehicle developed by Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) researchers, it looks a lot like the cars of today. For a couple of days in June 2014, Raj Rajkumar, a professor of electrical and computer engineering and robotics at CMU, and his team brought their state-of-the-art autonomous vehicle to Washington, D.C., at the invitation of Rep. Bill Shuster (R-PA), chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. Autoradio
The researchers took members of Congress, the media and others on test rides, demonstrating the car’s ability to navigate city streets and highways without human intervention. Developed with support from NSF, the U.S. Department of Transportation, DARPA and General Motors, the car is the result of more than a decade of research and development that led to advances in such underlying technologies as sensors, software, wireless communications and network integration. In the vehicle, hidden radar, cameras, sensors, computers and other technologies control the steering, speed, and braking, and also detect and avoid obstacles such as pedestrians and cyclists. In the D.C. demonstrations, however, an engineer was in the driver’s seat and ready to take the wheel, if necessary. |
